The train: what children like, and its limits

For many children the train is the highlight. It is a narrow-gauge line with heated carriages and large windows, and the round trip takes about 1 hour 45 minutes, including a 20-minute stop at La Macarena, where you can see the locomotive up close and walk to a waterfall. On a tour you usually ride one way into the park, which agencies put at about an hour, and the van meets you at the park station.

A few things matter more with children:

• There are no toilets on the train. There are toilets at the main station and at Estación Parque Nacional, so use them before boarding.
• The trains have no space for strollers or luggage, and there is no luggage storage at the station. A baby carrier is easier.
• Seats are not numbered. Passengers board in order of arrival, and staff seat each family group together.
• Check-in is 45 minutes before departure, which is a long wait with a toddler. On a tour the operator handles the timing.
• Simple snacks are allowed on board.

Child fares are half the adult price, and infants ride free:

In Premium class a child aged 4 to 12 pays ARS 110,000, rising to ARS 125,000 from October 2026. Children who ride free do not get the Premium menu. How much walking a standard tour involves

Very little. On our pick you spend about three hours inside the park, with a walk along the shore of Lake Acigami and around 30 minutes each at Ensenada Bay and Lapataia Bay. Strollers, car seats and carriers

Stroller rules vary by tour. The train has no room for them. Two GetYourGuide tours list non-folding strollers as not allowed, so a compact folding stroller or a carrier is the safer choice. On Viator, the Small-Group National Park Tour, Optional Train says infants and small children can ride in a pram or stroller and that specialized infant seats are available. It is from $54 per person, and the listing calls it suitable for all ages. The Tierra del Fuego National Park tour requires infants to sit on an adult’s lap. Ask about a child seat when you book any tour.

Toilets and food

The train stations have toilets, and the Alakush visitor center has a cafeteria and restaurant, open daily 10:00 to 17:30. Listings that stop there mention restrooms, a café and a small museum. Cold, wind and what to pack

Ushuaia is cool even in summer: January averages a high of 13.6 °C, and precipitation falls on 13 to 16 days a month. Children get cold faster than adults on open viewpoints, so bring a warm hat, gloves, a waterproof jacket and a spare layer in every season. Half day or full day?

Is canoeing suitable for children?

It depends on the age, and each listing sets its own rule. The Trekking & Canoeing tour (our breakdown →) is not suitable for children under 5. The Trekking and Canoeing in Lapataia Bay is not recommended for children aged 5 and under, who must be with an adult. The Exclusive Hike and Canoe Tour has a minimum age of 10. All three ask for a reasonable level of fitness and last about 8 hours, so they suit active older children best.

Wildlife children may spot

The Castorera trail leads to an old beaver dam. Beavers were brought from North America and have damaged the park’s forests, which makes for a good story on the walk. The morning tour includes a stop at Cormorants Island and a beaver dam, and its listing suggests watching for native birds at Lake Acigami.
