Tierra del Fuego National Park vs Beagle Channel: Which Should You Do?

The short answer

With one full day in Ushuaia you do not have to choose: a guided park morning with the End of the World Train and a 3-hour Beagle Channel boat trip fit into a single 8.5-hour day. With only half a day, pick the park for forest, lakes and short walks, or the channel for islands, sea lions and the lighthouse. One day in Ushuaia: what fits

This question usually comes from travellers with a single clear day, either a cruise call or a day before or after an Antarctic voyage. Here is how that day splits.

A guided park tour takes about 4.5 to 5.5 hours from your hotel and back. The park entrance is about 11 km west of town, so most of that time is spent inside it, not on the road. A standard Beagle Channel boat trip lasts about 3 hours from the Tourist Port in the centre of town. On the longer option with a penguin colony, it is about 5 hours.

Choose the park if you want forest, lakes and the end of the road

Tierra del Fuego National Park is where sea coast and mountains meet. You drive through lenga forest, the southern beech that covers the lower slopes, to glacial lakes, beaver dams and quiet bays on the Beagle Channel shore. The walks on a guided tour are short and easy, on paths and boardwalks.

The usual stops are Ensenada Zaratiegui, a cove on the channel; Lake Acigami, still often called Lake Roca; the Alakush visitor centre; and Lapataia Bay, where Route 3 runs out at the sign reading “Buenos Aires 3079 km – Alaska 17848 km”. The End of the World Post Office at Ensenada is often closed, so do not plan around it.

The park is the better pick if:

• You like to be on your feet, even for short walks, more than on a deck.
• You want the end-of-the-road photo at Lapataia.
• You would like to add the End of the World Train, which starts just outside the park.
• The weather is rough. A boat trip depends on conditions on the water, and one recent reviewer of the combined day had the navigation cancelled.

Choose the Beagle Channel if you want islands and wildlife from the water

The channel trip shows Ushuaia from the other side: the town, the mountains behind it and the coastline, seen from a boat. On the 3-hour navigation in the combined day, the boat passes Les Éclaireurs Lighthouse, Isla de los Pájaros (a bird island) and the sea lion island, with a photo stop at the island the listing calls “H” island. Several reviewers of that trip also report humpback whales, but no listing promises them.

Penguins are the one sighting that needs planning. On the combined day they are only on the longer 5-hour navigation option, which visits a penguin colony, and only in the season the listing gives as about mid-October to the end of March. Outside those months, or on the standard boat trip, expect sea lions and seabirds.

The channel is the better pick if:

• Sea lions, seabirds and a lighthouse matter more to you than forest walks.
• You would rather sit and watch than walk.
• You are in Ushuaia from mid-October to March and want the penguin colony.

Morning or afternoon?

The combined day puts the park first and the boat at 2:15 pm, which is a sensible order: the park tour collects you from your hotel, and the boat leaves from the port in the middle of town, a short walk from where the morning ends. If you book the two halves separately, the same order works well: a morning park tour, lunch in town, then an afternoon on the water.

Park opening hours are 9:00 to 18:00 from April to September and 8:00 to 20:00 in March, October and November, stretching to 21:00 from December to February. Daylight is long in summer and short in winter, only about 7 hours around the June solstice, so a winter day with both halves is tight.

Cruise passengers

On a port day of about 6 hours, one half is realistic, not both. A park shore excursion runs about 4 to 5.5 hours from the port and back, and the shore excursions page compares them. The combined day is a hotel-pickup tour that ends in the late afternoon; its operator asks cruise passengers to send their ship’s arrival and departure times, so it suits only a ship that is in port all day.

How many days in Ushuaia?

One full day covers the park and the channel with a guide. A second day opens up a longer walk in the park, such as the coastal trail from Ensenada Zaratiegui, which is open from November to April, or a full day of hiking and canoeing, covered on our hiking tours page.
