Tierra del Fuego National Park Hiking & Canoeing Tours

You can hike the marked trails on your own. The park minibuses leave from Av. Maipú and Juana Fadul in Ushuaia, and you pay the entry fee of ARS 40,000 per foreign visitor online or at the gate. A guide adds transport, knowledge of the forest and wildlife, and, on the hike and canoe tours, the canoe trip, which needs a guide and equipment. For longer trails such as Cerro Guanaco, check the season and the last entry time first.

November to April. That is when the longer trails are open: the Senda Costera, Pampa Alta, Hito XXIV and Cerro Guanaco are closed the rest of the year. January and February are the warmest months, with average highs of about 14°C, and around the December solstice there are more than 17 hours of daylight. From May to September the short trails stay open, and a winter hike and canoe tour runs in the snow.

The shortest marked trails take 15 to 30 minutes. The Castorera trail is 0.2 km to an old beaver dam, about 20 minutes. The Paseo de la Isla is 1.3 km, about 30 minutes, and the Mirador Lapataia viewpoint is just under 1 km, also about 30 minutes. The Laguna Negra boardwalk, 0.5 km, is currently under repair. Most standard park tours include short walks like these at their stops.

The Senda Costera is the classic choice: an 8 km coastal trail from Ensenada Zaratiegui to the junction of Route 3 and Lake Roca, taking about 4 hours at medium difficulty. It is open from November to April only, and it runs from one point to another, so plan how you will get back. A guided hike and canoe tour is the easier way to combine forest walking with time on the water.

Of the marked trails, Cerro Guanaco is the one the national parks service rates high difficulty, and it is 6 km one way, so the return doubles that distance. It is open from November to April only, with last entry at 12:30. It is a hike for fit walkers with proper boots and waterproof layers. For something long but less demanding, the Senda Costera is 8 km at medium difficulty.

Good fitness, sturdy waterproof boots and warm, waterproof layers are the basics, because weather in Ushuaia changes quickly. You also need the park entry ticket, ARS 40,000 per foreign visitor, bought online or at the gate.

We cannot give current trail conditions, and they change with the weather. Rain falls in every month in Ushuaia, spread fairly evenly through the year, so wet ground is likely. Operators running walks in the park advise walking shoes or hiking boots suited to wet, muddy ground, plus a waterproof jacket. The Senda Costera is open from November to April only. Check with the park rangers on the day.

The canoe trips we cover are all guided, and the operators supply the canoes and safety gear, such as life jackets, rubber boots and overtrousers. We do not cover independent canoe hire in the park. The guided trips follow the Lapataia and Ovando rivers down to Lapataia Bay for about 1 to 1.5 hours, as part of a full day that includes a hike and lunch.

Not on the hike and canoe tours: they collect you from your hotel, and several state that cruise passengers cannot book. If you are in port for the day, look at shore excursions that include walking, such as a shared Viator shore tour with hiking of about 5.5 hours, or a private shore tour where the guide can plan more trail time. Joining a guided tour is the simplest option if you are alone. The hike and canoe tours keep groups small, the GetYourGuide version at up to 10 participants, and the guide handles the route and the canoe trip. If you hike on your own, stick to the marked trails, check that a longer trail is open for the season, respect the 12:30 last entry on Cerro Guanaco, and carry warm, waterproof layers.

The tour listings are specific: a waterproof jacket and trousers, a fleece or thermal layer, gloves, a hat and a neck warmer, waterproof shoes or boots with good grip, and an extra pair of socks. One operator makes warm clothing and waterproof trekking boots compulsory and may turn away anyone without them. Sunglasses help on bright days. Snow is common from June to September, but the weather changes quickly all year.

Camping in the park is seasonal, with the campsites generally running from November to April; the Río Pipo campsite is one of them. Opening can depend on road conditions, so check with the national parks service before you plan around it. None of the tours on this page includes camping: they are all day trips with hotel pickup in Ushuaia.

Many visitors see the park on a standard guided tour of about 5 hours, with short walks at Ensenada Zaratiegui, Lake Acigami and Lapataia Bay.
